Andrew Morgan's PAEP Reflection Paper

           Jake Burton Started the company in 1977 with just a simple concept and design called the “Backhill”. Although he was only working out of his garage, it would later result in contributing the explosion and popularity of the sport. It would take only a few years for Burton’s boards to really catch on in the 80’s as well as the popularity of the sport which had only been around for 15 years. Burton now is a prominent figure in the snow sport industry.
            Since the sport has not been around as long as say skiing, each year people were thinking and creating new and innovating designs and equipment to essentially improve how people participate in this modern snow sport. From the tour we were able to see what years of dedication to improving the snowboarding experience had birthed. Burton has a multitude of equipment used to produce high quality bindings, lenses, boards, etc.
            The 3D printer and SLS machine provided us with an opportunity to see if whether or not Burton as a company was sustainable. These machines are what set Burton apart from other companies because of their drive to test and produce the best quality equipment. However when brought up the only thing we found that Burton implements when thinking towards sustainability was their reuse of materials in the SLS and 3D printer.
            When looking at Burton’s website on suitability, we were pretty impressed with some of their policies as well as their overall attitude towards the topic. Some of their policies that we liked were the use of recycled materials in their equipment, snowboards, etc.  They also formed the Green Mountain Project with Mountain Dew to make apparel and outwear with less of an impact on the environment.
            While we were impressed with Burton’s sustainability page, we had set out to find whether or not Burton really was green or “green washing”, a term used for companies or people who claim to be green but in actuality they are not. In this case we found that Burton had elements of both green and green washed policies.
            As stated above Burton has many green policies which are impressive, but policies like the bike barn and the green kitchen came off as a little odd to us. What we found that it wasn't like they were lying, but was simply a case of not enough of the employees being environmentally aware as well as taking that needed action to making a difference. Like a lot of environmental issues happening today, the most prominent set back in trying to maintain our world is the lack of action and awareness to change our policies and methods.

            We made it very clear in our poster about how we viewed Burton’s Sustainability program. We found that Burton as a company has the right idea about how to transition themselves over to a company with less of an impact on the earth, but need to execute these ideas and execute them well. I personally couldn't have had more fun on this project. We all did our part to find out what it was we needed to set out and do and then got right to work with the poster. Although it did take a while to get the tour we were able to create a visually appealing poster in which my group member’s feedback was extremely useful in helping me design it. Overall I was very happy with our groups findings and as well as the topic as a whole.

            The Vermont Institute of Natural Science is a nonprofit organization dedicated to environmental education and avian rehabilitation. VINS makes “high-quality, compelling, and fun environmental education programs” (About VINS) a priority to inform the community about the environment and our impacts on it.  Its overall mission is to “motivate individuals and communities to care for the environment through education, research, and avian wildlife rehabilitation” (About VINS).
             Originally based out of Woodstock, Vermont, VINS was the first organization of its kind in the New England area. The Trust for Public Land helped VINS gain 28 acres of land (TPL) in 1996. Now based in Quechee Vermont they have been the leader in wildlife conservation since their opening in 1972. They are open year-round, with a 47-acre campus, adjacent to Quechee State Park, featuring “17 state-of-the-art raptor enclosures, 4 exhibit spaces, 2 classrooms, and ¾ miles of interpretive nature trails” (About VINS).
              Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators will take injured birds if the parents are known to be dead and the animal is too young to survive on its own, the animal has been injured, the animal is in immediate or obvious danger, or the bird is found with a cat. Upon receiving a raptor VINS decides whether, after given treatment and rehabilitation, it will be able to live in the wild once more based on the severity of its injuries. One of the main ways of determining this is a test on whether they can catch their own food; a mouse is placed in an enclosed area with the raptor, if it is captured within a certain timeframe the bird is on its way to being released.            There are many policies and regulations that the Vermont Institute of Natural Science and its handlers must carefully follow when considering taking a raptor in. One of the most stressed policies that Nathan (a handler giving a Raptors Up Close presentation) mentioned was the inability for VINS to accept any birds that are not native to Vermont. Additionally, in order to legally rehabilitate the raptors at all both VINS and its handlers must meet the requirements of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and then receive permits from them.                VINS’ mission is to motivate individuals and communities to care for the environment. They believe that it is our duty to help these birds continue a life after injures and hopefully be able to release them into the wild.  Many birds that are taken in for rehabilitation and rescue are injured through human involvement, because of this VINS strives to educate others in order to prevent these injuries all together. They educate their visitors on ways to have less of a negative impact on the wildlife around them through their work and assemblies. Their website has an extensive list of precautions to take ranging from being wary and observant when trimming trees to keeping your bird feeders clean. (Protect Birds)
             Due to the fact that a majority of birds taken in for rehabilitation and rescue were injured because of human involvement, VINS sees it as our duty to help them recover. If the birds are so injured they will not be able to survive in the wild the organization provides them with a healthy diet that is compatible with their native food and an active lifestyle in captivity.
             Through researching and rescuing these birds VINS is doing a great service to the environment, the community, and of course, the birds themselves. These raptors are a part of an ecosystem and if their populations were to decrease it would throw the entire system off balance. The decrease would cause an increase in the rodent population which would then cause a decrease in vegetation. The rescuing of raptors then, in turn, benefits our community; the fewer rodents means the less vegetation eaten out of our flower and vegetable gardens.
               It cannot be stressed enough that many of the raptors that are taken in by VINS are injured due to some type of human interaction. Our way of living has interfered with the lives of raptors immensely; glass doors, domesticated pets, the felling of trees, are all know to cause life threatening injuries and even death. However even when awareness of our negative effects on the environment is raised we do not make chances, this is because of the Take Story. Takers believe that the world was made for man, and man was made to rule it; they believe that we are entitled to everything the world has to offer and we have no obligation to restore it. For ten thousand years Takers have been disregarding the Peacekeeping Law. We have been consuming so much more than we need only to become ignorant and lazy. These lifestyles are not beneficial to any species and we would be better off to completely change our way of living before we reach a point of no return. (Ishmael)
              The VINS group was extremely energetic, however we had trouble getting the ball rolling at just about every step. It took us a few weeks to even decide on studying the Vermont Institute, and after that it was very hard to find a time where everyone in our group was free. Three of us ended up traveling to the site, which ended up being a three hour round trip, and were able to see a Raptors Up Close presentation an speak with the handlers. After the visit the only difficulties were providing satisfactory research for the poster and finding time to work it as a group. VINS mission and goals were evident however it was very hard to find information fitting to the requirements giving for the assignment. As for the poster, we initially planned on making our own by hand, however we couldn't find the time and Maddie surprised us by whipping up a draft on her own. From there we all pulled together and were able to provide a very satisfactory piece of artwork!
          The Vermont Institute for Natural Science is a very ethical organization; it was a pleasure to be able to study them more closely. Their passion for helping raptors and educating the community on how to reduce our negative effects on them is inspiring. One of my largest motivations for preserving the environment and living sustainability with it is the animals we harm in our Taker culture. I have always been passionate for the wellbeing of animals, and because of that I hope to learn more about VINS and other organizations like it.

Madelyn's PAEP: VINS

The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS), to me, is firstly an aviary rehabilitation center. However, they identify as a non-profit environmental education center. The programs used to pursue their mission are remarkable due to their interactivity.
Located in Quechee, Vermont, founded in 1972, and open all year VINS utilizes a 47-acre land to execute their mission. In 1996 The Trust for Public Land helped VINS gain 28 acres of land (TPL). The institute is the first nature center and rehabilitation clinic in the New England area. VINS’ mission has been and is to motivate people and communities to care about the environment through education, aviary rehabilitation, and research. Their research deals with various subjects of natural science and they even offer a research internship opportunity. When my group first looked up VINS I thought its mission had to do with aviary awareness, as it does deal with aviary rehabilitation. However, VINS does a great job at educating communities through its various programs and events based around avian rehabilitation.
The institute has various ways to educate the community, starting with elementary school children with their Environmental Learning for the Future Program (ELF), Naturalist-in-Residence Program, and specialized VINS field trips. The institute is so dedicated to getting information out to communities that they have the option to provide outreach programs where they come to you with a live animal presentation. They also allow visitors to see raptors engaging with trainers during feeding times and certain events at their center, such as Raptors Up Close and Bird ER. These events educate people on “subjects ranging from how we rehabilitate hundreds of birds each year, the fundamentals of how we train our raptors to the specialties of certain raptor groups like falcons and owls (VINS).” It was pleasant being able to ask the trainer at our Raptors Up Close event about the birds and the center. He was very friendly and informative on the raptors and what they do with them. These processes with which they use to make people more knowledgeable are effective and fun. 
Various policies govern the institute as VINS deals with wild animals. Mainly, the policies are through the Vermont Fish and Wildlife department. They must have a wildlife rehabilitation permit in order to legally care for and treat wildlife. Additionally, wildlife rehabilitators need permits issued by the state. However, since VINS deals with birds they must also follow the policies of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and obtain a separate permit, otherwise they’d be in violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The permit allows them to legally rehabilitate under the special purposes activity.
These policies deal with the peacekeeping law that Ishmael speaks about (Ishmael). They try to reduce the amount of wasted life that humans have occurred, which is humans trying to mend what they have done. However, sometimes if the wound to the birds is too fatal VINS euthanizes the bird. This ties into how humans believe they have been given the knowledge of who dies and who lives, as we don’t know if the animal will die or not but we decide for them if they do (Ishmael). I do believe that VINS is trying to encourage a sustainable ecosystem when they return rehabilitated birds to the wild, rather than keep all the birds with them at the facility. If they can continue their normal life in the wild then that is what they will do. Furthermore, VINS mission shows that they believe the community has responsibilities to the environment (Environmental Ethics).
The process of executing this project was challenging, as my group and I were undecided about what we should do. Through picking the place to doing the poster we struggled with it. Individually, everyone came through with their parts of the project. As a group, getting things done felt very slow. When we visited the VINS site we were very fortunate to have arrived in time for a raptor event. Learning about the birds, and experiencing how VINS attempted to educate people was interesting and helpful since the interactivity made it easier for us to understand their mission. Seeing the beautiful birds and finding out that humans were the most reported reasons for bird injuries really struck a chord with me. Their website was good for learning how they pursued their mission, but it didn’t have enough information on the center itself. Finding out about their history and what policies interacted with them included a lot of searching and piecing together small fragments of information.
Overall, learning about the Vermont Institute of Natural Science was a struggle. It is very clear that their mission is to make communities and individuals more environmentally aware and caring. However, all their background information, which we needed for the other three-fourths of the project, was very behind the scenes and difficult to obtain. It was interesting to see how our class’ lessons tie into this institute’s mission and processes.

A Reflective Analysis of Ben and Jerry's and the PAEP Project

            Over the past two months, I’ve been working with my group to uncover the mysteries of Ben and Jerry’s amazing policies for environmental sustainability. While I’m sure they aren’t the only ones out there (on a corporate level mind you), they are definitely one of the better ones I’ve seen and it was an interesting experience. My group and I made use of Ben and Jerry’s fairly strong attachment to Burlington, their home while working on this project. In this reflection I will briefly explain and analyze where Ben and Jerry’s started, their policies, science and technology, as well as their efforts to make what they do more environmentally friendly before ending with my individual reflection on the whole process. Let us dive into their origins first!

            Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield met in junior high school where their friendship began. After graduating high school and attempting to go to college, they decided that college wasn’t what they wanted and dropped out. They pooled together their life savings as well as a small bank loan and decided to open up an ice cream shop at an old gas station in Burlington, Vermont in May, 1978. Using their imagination and skills from a $5 ice cream making course from Penn State, Ben and Jerry created the various unique flavors we now know as Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. From there, you could say the rest is history. Nonetheless, a great start to a now world famous company.

            Ben and Jerry’s have many environmentally savvy policies that make them stand out. For starters, they have several environmental policies that have found their way into technology as you will see shortly in the next paragraph. Ben and Jerry’s also advocates for fair trade and are currently working on sourcing all of their ingredients to be fair trade certified. Jerry put is nicely when he said “Fairtrade is about making sure people get their fair share of the pie. The whole concept of fair trade goes to the heart of our values and sense of right and wrong. Nobody wants to buy something that was made by exploiting somebody else” (Jerry Greenfield). They also continue to support other policies such as cage free eggs and no GMOs. These policies are great models for other companies to hopefully use in the future.

            While it wouldn’t be fair to say that Ben and Jerry’s oppose science and technology, I will instead say they are selective. Being a very left sided company, they try to stay ‘natural’ and environmentally friendly to put it simply. For example, they created a new hydrocarbon freezer which they like to call the “The Cleaner Greener Freezer” (Ben and Jerry’s) which is not only more energy efficient, but also cleaner for the environment. They also oppose GMOs and always label them as such, as well as pushing to use milk from cows who aren’t using rGBH. This is to help keep the natural, organic ingredients that they love to use! Ben and Jerry’s are also working on better paper for their pints as they say here on their website. “Our long-term goals include using unbleached paperboard and finding food-safe renewable resins that can make our packaging fully compostable.” (Ben and Jerry’s). Definitely not a bad away to improve their product by using technology!

            As you have read in the previous paragraphs, I mentioned many of their efforts to make what they do more friendly to the environment. How exactly does all this tie into the ethical framework they are trying to establish here? Ben and Jerry’s is definitely not a very “normal” company by corporate standards. They are, as I said, very left sided meaning they are pushing to reduce their footprint, which is actually a very good thing. Being more environmentally aware, they are able to set the example for others around them. I also believe that this is part of their goal since the first step to solving a problem is being aware of it to begin with. If you haven’t picked up on it yet, their ethical framework is environmental sustainability.

            I believe that their ethical framework is exactly what we need for a very important reason. Companies these days, due to Taker influence, neglect the environment. They are constantly pushing to make what they do more efficient and cheaper, but not necessarily better for Mother Earth. Ishmael offered a similar idea as the Taker’s story or “The world was made for man, and man was made to conquer and rule it” (Ishmael 72). Ben and Jerry’s on the other hand try to take the opposite approach. Having a lot of influence these days due to their popularity, they’ve made use of their fantastic marketing skills to show the Takers that you can do things in an environmentally friendly way. Since they are well known for their ice cream, they can try to influence others to follow in their footsteps. This is where their ethical framework comes into place. You can see a good example of this with their Hydrocarbon Freezer. It is cleaner and more efficient than older freezers and is a perfect example of advocating cleaner practices in the industry.

            This entire process has definitely been a good chunk of work. While I definitely think we could have done better in some aspects, I am still pleased with the end result of our hard work. At the start, we didn’t really communicate much. We divided the work and kind of left each other to do our respective parts. Looking back, we probably should have worked more as a group, but it did improve later on. After our site tour and the poster work began, this is when our teamwork really began to shine. We met about 5 times after the site visit (in person!) where we worked together on the poster. While some of us were not always able to make it, we did have at least ¾ of us there each time which is very good in my opinion. I was usually leading the meetings and I was able to brush off my excitement into my group and the result was fantastic. Overall, I’m very pleased with the co-operation my group put into the project when it mattered the most (a.k.a. the poster). They were willing to take time out of their busy schedules to meet in person and talk it out which I believe is more effective than using social media or instant messaging. The only thing I would have changed was our teamwork at the beginning when it was almost non-existent.

Intervale Reflection

The Intervale Center is located in South Burlington, Vermont. They are a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening community food systems. These ideal community food systems would honor producers for the back breaking work they do, value good food, and overall, improve the quality of life for the greater Burlington area. By improving farm viability, utilizing sustainable agricultural practices and promoting locally sourced food, the Intervale helps to alleviate the environmental harm caused by traditional agriculture(Intervale.org).

            The Intervale is an organization with a rich yet somewhat disturbing background, and truly an example of human ingenuity combatting environmental damage. In ancient times, the field was utilized by Native Americans for hunting game and foraging seasonal crops. Strong evidence points to the Intervale being developed agriculturally by the Abenaki between 1000 and 1500 AD. They would harvest corn, squash and other native crops. The beginning to what was nearly the end came in 1772 when the Onion River Land Company was founded and began to sell off the Intervale land. In the 1860’s Central Vermont Railroad began laying track through what is now the Intervale. More damage was done in the early 1900’s when dairy farms began operating on the land. These dairies and other business that had been laying claim to the Intervale land were devastated in 1927 due to floods of biblical proportions that destroyed the land and anything on it. Thinking the land was useless, a municipal dump opened in the 1940’s and the landscape became scattered with everything nobody wanted including old furniture, broken down cars, and other disgusting remnants of taker society. A savior came to the forgotten land in the 1980’s when Will Raap purchased the land and it was rezoned by the city to disallow any further industrial growth into the area. In 1988 the Intervale center was established as a compost and yard waste recycling project. It has continued to grow to this day and now includes a food hub, tree nursery and several other important components(Intervale.org).

            In terms of science and technology the Intervale is a leader in terms of sustainable and organic agriculture. So, rather than being a leader in science and technology they are a leader in the opposite. Where large farms use pesticides and fertilizer, the Intervale relies on organic farming. They replace synthetic fertilizer with manure, which is taken from their own livestock. Crops are rotated in order to conserve the fertility of the land. Runoff and, by extension, eutrophication are prevented by well-planned irrigation and the use of greenhouses(Intervale.org).

            The Intervale’s policies are both noble and practical. To begin with, the Intervale Center is a nonprofit organization. This prevents the ever present call of greed and wealth from overtaking the moral and sustainable practices of the organization. Another interesting policy the Intervale practices is selling “shares” of farmland at the beginning of each season. This practice, which is instrumental in maintaining, operating, and paying for the farm, allows community members to pay whatever amount of money they wish, and in return receive a fair percentage of the crops or livestock that are harvested with that money. This means a particularly good season would lead to a larger share of food for the investor then a poor growing season. This connection strengthens the relationship between farmer and consumer, and does not allow for the disillusionment of food production caused by major agricultural institutions(Intervale.org).

            Ethically, Intervale is a wonderful example of sustainable agriculture and shows how providing sustenance does not have to adversely affect our planet. As previously mentioned they are a certified organic farm. This means that they undergo periodic onsite inspections in order to show that they utilize no pesticides, fertilizers, or antibiotics in their food production, keeping detailed records of their production and sales as well as other regulated policies. Providing organic meats and crops not only prevents humans from ingesting potentially dangerous chemicals with unknown side effects, but also keeps the planet healthy by preserving the fertility of the farmland, preventing eutrophication, and stopping the release of toxic chemicals into our air and water(Greene). Furthermore, by providing locally grown crops and locally raised livestock, the Intervale not only stimulates our communities’ economy, but also provides benefits to the environment by preventing the shipping of food products from far away sources, thereby ridding our planet of harmful bi products of burning fossil fuels that would be produced in the transport of these goods. The most interesting ethical decision of the Intervale is seen in their location. Formally a dump, the Intervale shows how land that has been deemed “useless” can actually be restored and used for production of necessary goods such as food. This is important as it prevents the farmland from being outsourced to other nations, such as in South America where forests are clear cut at an ever expanding rate. The main cause of deforestation is clear cutting land for agriculture and if we continue cutting down the rainforest at the current rate it is estimated all of the world’s rain forests will be completely gone within 100 years(National Geographic.com).

The Intervale’s management and ethical framework is not only respectable in that they are sustaining our ecosystem for future generations, but also is a main selling point in their business. As a small market farm, they could never feasibly compete with the sickening low prices established by corporate agriculture such as Monsanto. However, their organic farming, locally sourced food, and other sustainable practices allow them to fulfill a niche market with big agriculture could never achieve. Although the cost on a potato to potato basis, for example, may be quite different, one cannot put a price on a healthy body or the morality boost that comes from supporting an organization which is out for the greater good of not only our community but the world as a whole.

Throughout our endeavors into creating our PAEP poster, learning opportunities were abundant, interesting, and exciting, but also challenging. This project provided us with an opportunity to work in groups of our peers, coordinating meeting times to match with everyone’s schedule, expressing our personal talents as well as areas we struggle with, and finally coordinating who will produce each piece of the poster. The site visit created an environment in which we were given an opportunity to present ourselves in a  professional manner, which not only reflects upon us as individuals but also Champlain College as a whole. This skill will be fundamental in the future in arenas such as job interviews and, provided the economy is not so stagnant that the job market is inhospitable, presenting ourselves as professionals in the workplace.

The Intervale Center is a nonprofit organization which aims to provide organic, locally sourced food to the Burlington area. It has a rich history which includes dark times as well as glorious revival. Their agricultural practices provide sustainable solutions to the problem of providing sustenance and their ethics are a prime example of how farms and other organizations can be positive attributes for their community as well as the planet as a whole. The overall experience of creating a professional poster was a worthwhile and interesting experience.

PAEP Reflection Paper

The Burton Snowboard Company began in 1977 in the town of Londonderry, Vermont.  Creator and founder, Jake Burton Carpenter, wanted to create a new version of a snowboard that already existed, the snurfer, and began doing so in his own garage (“Burton…”).  What started out as just a passion, eventually became the biggest snowboard company in the industry.  Today, Burton Snowboards specializes in producing snowboards, bindings, boots, helmets, outerwear, and snowboard accessories. 
            When we were introduced to do this project I thought what better to pick a company that produces something that I love to do.  Choosing Burton was a no brainer because snowboarding is a passion of mine and luckily there is a Flagship Store and Factory right in town.  Getting a tour was probably the hardest part about this entire project.  I had emailed corporate Burton and their sustainability department for a few weeks to get a special tour before realizing they give free public tours every Tuesday and Thursday.  It was my friend Chris Dimarco, who let me know after I explained our groups concerns with the tour.  Getting the general tour of the Factory was something I will never forget.  It was very cool to see how the snowboards are made from beginning to end.
            Burton is the only snowboard company to have an SLS machine and 3D printer in their factory.  Our group watched as the lens and frame to a prototype goggle was being made right in front of our own eyes.  It is with these machines that Burton can prototype products, such as bindings, and bring them out to Stowe to test them out on the slopes.  This saves the cost of importing in prototype bindings from their factory in Austria. 
            There was also a spot in the factory dedicated to testing products made in the Burlington factory.  “The torture chamber” as our tour guide called it was a room devoted to seeing what limits the boards and bindings would go through before breaking.  Our group got to watch a 600-dollar snowboard be bent tip to tip until it exploded in the middle.  Seeing a company put so much into product testing was a really neat thing to witness. 
            Burton is the world’s largest producer of snowboarding products.  On their website they put sustainability at the forefront of all their concern.  However when getting a tour in the Burlington facilities, the only “green” thing we witnessed was that they reused the powder in the SLS machine and 3D printer.  Other than that everything seemed pretty “green-washed”.  It was my groups goal to determine whether Burton is green or green washing in regards to their ethics to the environment. 
            My friend Chris was able to give us information on their company’s portal site on a lot of concrete green things Burton is doing.  Burton Snowboards and Mountain Dew formed the Green Mountain Project in 2011 to focus on making sustainable apparel and outwear (Dimarco).  The GMP takes recycled plastic bottles and transforms them into pellets that can be spun into thread in order to make fabric.  The men and women outwear styles noted with the GMP logo are made with recycled plastics and/or eco materials wherever possible such as in shell fabrics, waterproof/breathable laminates, finishes, insulations, linings, shock cords, elastics, buttons, zipper pulls, labels and artwork applications (Dimarco).  In 2012 the Green Mountain Process also created 27 snowboards.  If a snowboard is marked with the GMP logo Burton has infused recycled plastic, metal, and manufacturing waste into the topsheets, bases, edges, sidewalls, or their patented channel plug (Dimarco).  Burton has also supported POW, Protect our Winters, which is a group focused on trying to eliminate climate change. 
            Now Burton certainly does a lot of things that are green but many things listed on their website seemed a little wishy washy.  In effort to reduce employee’s carbon footprint, Burton promotes alternative transportation to and from work.  They offer free CCTA bus passes to all employees and also have preferred parking closer to the main entrance of the building for people who carpool (“Burton…”).   However, when our group was on site, the parking lot couldn’t have been more full of cars.  They also have a “green kitchen” which means they have plates and silverware available for employee use.  Burton boasts about a community garden in which employees participate in harvesting their own food but only 6% of the company uses the garden and it was very tiny and tucked on the end of the building (“Burton…”). 
            I’m not trying to sit here and bash Burton as a company.  However I am here to say that Burton may not be as green as they promote themselves to be.  A majority of “green” things they pride themselves on seem insignificant and unrelated to the production of physical products.  Our groups final consensus was that Burton is one of the more green companies within the snowboarding industry and is on their way to being as green as they’d like to promote themselves to be. 
            Even though Burton may not have been as green as we would like and our project may seem very different from all the other groups, I’m very happy to have looked into this.  Snowboarding is a passion of mine so doing this project was a real treat.  I feel fortunate that Burton is located a mile away from Champlain and that my friend was able to give us inside company information.  This project was very educational and fun at the same time.  Everyone in our group was a contributing member and we were able to efficiently schedule times to meet and complete the project.  I’m also happy that Andrew had skills in Photoshop to make our PAEP poster look “professional”.  This project was a great learning experience and taught me skills for I had to reach out to a company and couldn’t just rely on the Internet or a book for a source.  I’m looking forward to sharing with the class what we found when we really analyzed Burton’s sustainability.

Sustainable Agriculture: Is the Past the Future of Farming?

               For thousands of years a form of agriculture has been practiced that differs from the normally accepted and practiced totalitarian agriculture. This agriculture, called sustainable agriculture, has been used in harmony with the environment to provide humans while conserving the environment. Before the transition to totalitarian agriculture, ten thousand years ago, humans would farm small plots of land in ways which were relatively friendly to the environment. When modern agriculture began to arise thousands of years ago, sustainable agriculture was discarded as rapid farming innovations resulting in higher yields were favored. Today, conventional agriculture has led to lower food prices for consumers resulting in an abundance of inexpensive food. Now, back to description of sustainable agriculture, why do I consider sustainable agriculture to be conservation of the environment rather than preservation of the environment? Let us examine what each of the two words means and then decide which describes sustainable agriculture the best. Preservation is to “keep something as it is” and conservation is “the greatest good for the greatest number under scientific management of what is being conserved” (Williams). Clearly sustainable agriculture is not as simple as maintaining the status quo. Sustainable agriculture still uses some aspects of totalitarian agriculture. For instance, farmers still have to provide water to their crops and look after the crops by intervening in the affairs of nature (ie: removing weeds, raising plants in greenhouses, etc).
Because those that practice sustainable agriculture use less machinery, do not use any pesticides, and limit the amount of fertilizers being used it means that they are taking the utilitarian approach with a scientific view of what is more harmful to the environment due to the use of ecological principles guiding the practice of sustainable agriculture. Instead of using sustainable agriculture In modern times, sustainable agriculture is still around, but in a much smaller capacity than it was during previous millennia. A relatively small, but slowly growing, amount of American farmers now practice sustainable agriculture. And this now leads us to a look at an example of sustainable agriculture. The Intervale Center and its group of partner farms have been practicing and promoting the use of sustainable agriculture for over twenty years. Before its transition to farming, the Intervale was used as a dump. Will Rapp, the founder of Gardener’s Supply Company, and other members of the community wanted to turn the Intervale into a place that could be used for gardening and farming. Ironically, Native Americans had used the Intervale for agriculture purposes long before this. Today the Intervale Center and its partner farms serve to strengthen communities through sustainable community food systems. Community food systems are designed to grow, process, distribute, and consume food in sustainable manners while also enhancing the health of the community through environmental, economic, social, or nutritional ways. The Intervale tries to fulfill these goals by enhancing the viability of farming, promoting the use of sustainable agriculture, and engaging communities in farming.
Farming by conventional means requires the use of large farm machinery and chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides. Sustainable agriculture on the other hand does not make much use of these technologies because they are harmful to the environment. Those practicing sustainable agriculture do sometimes need to use conventional technology in order to counteract the weather and other such factors. They raise plants in greenhouses during cold seasons and then open the greenhouses up when it gets warm enough for the plants to grow. Plants can’t survive well when a dry period is going on so sustainable farms still need to irrigate their crops. This irrigation gets done is sustainable and renewable ways such as harvesting rainwater and not using more water than required. Sustainable agriculture often uses other methods to raise crops in ways which prevent the ground from running out of nutrients. They use crop rotation in order to do this. One year a crop could be planted in some field. The next year the field could be unused or have an entirely different crop planted instead. The practice of crop rotation is not a new tactic; it has been used for a long time in human history. Given how land runs out of nutrients, past farming techniques that did not focus on farming the land to its maximum potential may hold the key to sustainability. The Intervale utilizes greenhouses and protective plant covering in order to raise plants during various seasons during which the plants could not normally grow. Once the climate is right for the plants, they are either taken outside and planted or, in some cases, are kept in the greenhouses but with the greenhouses opened up.
Agricultural policy, at least within the United States, has a very large focus on totalitarian agriculture. Provided that farmers meet certain fairly straightforward guidelines and regulations they are free to do whatever they desire with the farm land. The American farmer has a mission to produce enough food to feed the world. In order to fulfill this mission they must always farm the land at its capacity. Beyond certain quality control requirements, conventional farmers can farm next to rivers, water supplies, and animal habitats without much fear of repercussions from releasing and spreading pollution. Certain doctrines, such as the Agricultural Adjustment Act of granted subsidies to farmers in return for not farming all of their land, but these types of policies do not stop pollution since they merely make the farmers push the capacity of the land which they are farming on to higher levels (Chaney). Policies towards sustainable agriculture do not really occur on a national level. Instead states, counties, or cities are more likely to implement them on a wide scale. Organizations such as the Intervale impose sustainable regulations on their partner farms as well; these farms must fit in with the Intervale’s goals, beliefs, and mission in order to remain partners. There are also larger organizations, such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, that certify certain foods as organic so long as they meet quality and farming method standards.
Those who practice sustainable agriculture usually try to break away from conventional agriculture for ethical reasoning such as doing their part in reducing pollution and farming waste. Sustainable agriculture acts as a counter to the current convention of totalitarian agriculture since it lessens farming pollution, particularly with regard to fertilizers being released. The release of fertilizers plays a large role in polluting water supplies and the habitats of animals. Non-sustainable agriculture creates point source pollution from the carbon emissions resulting from farm machinery and it also creates nonpoint source pollution as a result of farm runoff containing wastes such as fertilizers and pesticides. Sustainable agriculture, on the other hand, seeks to avoid these issues by utilizing more Earth friendly farming techniques. In most cases of sustainable agriculture, no pesticides or fertilizers are used. Farms practicing sustainable agriculture also often avoid using big, exhaust emitting farming machinery. Because sustainable agriculture does not use the techniques designed for the purpose of reducing farming expenses while still maintaining a large output of produce more human labor is required to grow fewer plants. As a result, food produced by sustainable agriculture ends up being more expensive than that produced via conventional agriculture. This raises the question of whether the practice of products grown in a sustainable manner can be considered as a worthwhile alternative for consumers than conventionally grown products and brings forth the debate whether any restrictions should be placed on those partaking in conventional agriculture to prevent or reduce environmental damages. As James Maroney described the adoption and continuation of conventional agriculture during his presentation, “we are adjusting the Earth to our agriculture, not adjusting our agriculture to the Earth” (Maroney). This is a very adequate description of the Taker lifestyle which promotes how “man was meant to rule the world” (Quinn 80-83). The Leaver ideology, however, fits much more in line with sustainable agriculture as it was with the Leavers that sustainable agriculture was first practiced. Conventional agriculture defies the peace keeping law because Takers “systematically destroy their competitors’ food to make room for their own” (Quinn 127), while sustainable agriculture follows it, at least to a certain extent. Ishmael describes the peace keeping law as “take what you need, and leave the rest along” (Quinn 127). The extent to which sustainable agriculture follows the peace keeping law is debatable since modern sustainable agriculture still uses certain Taker technologies, such as watering methods and greenhouses to alter the environment in which the plants live. In order for it to completely follow the peace keeping law, truely sustainable agriculture would have to place its success “in the hands of the gods” (Quinn 229) and risk some crops failing rather than still enforcing human control over the plants. Sustainable agriculture, without a doubt, follows the peace keeping law much more than totalitarian agriculture does.
Many of the decisions made in regard to making ethical agricultural decisions are shortsighted and express Taker ignorance and an unwillingness to lose control which has been gained over the years. This was another thing which James Maroney discussed. He mentioned how difficult it was for agricultural change to occur because the United States places such a high emphasis on conventional agriculture than it does on sustainable agriculture. Conventional agriculturalists are protected and are often exempted from laws that attempt to protect the environment. This is why instead of attacking the conventional agriculture dilemma directly Maroney instead focused on how conventional agriculture practices are polluting the water supplies. Another reason that I think we often run into issues when trying to fix the problems created by conventional agriculture is because the US government is too conflicted by opposing views to be able to make any decisions. A large portion of those required to enact any large national scale change (ie: Congress) do not know much of anything about the conventional agriculture issue and are focused on other issues instead. Next we must look at how the mission of the American farmer is to feed the world. When feeding the world, there cannot be any smaller scale agriculture that produces less because the farmer’s mission cannot be carried out. Perhaps the last key point related to the issues with tackling conventional agriculture and promoting sustainable agriculture in its place is Mother Culture whispering that more production and a surplus is good in every ones’ ears. Until these misconceptions are cleared it will not be possible for ethical decisions regarding the use of agriculture to be used.
               I found this project to be a good wrap up of the topics we covered in class this semester since it takes them all and ties them together. Overall the project went rather well, but I think perhaps the most complicated part was working in a group. It can be fairly difficult to get a decently sized group of four people to coordinate together due to differing schedules and things going on. We did a good deal of our communication in a Canvas conversation which worked out rather well considering that it was much cleaner than lots of emails would have been. One group member didn’t do as much as the others, but we still managed to get everything done on time. Another issue that we ran into was finding an organization to visit. We were originally going to do VPIRG, but they never answered us so we ended up going with the Intervale instead. In conclusion, I thought that this project tied in nicely with the class and was a good way of concluding and reflecting on what we covered this semester.
